High Road to China (a.k.a. Raiders of the End of the World) is a 1983 American adventure-romance film set in the 1920s starring Tom Selleck in his first major starring role, playing a hard-drinking biplane pilot hired by society heiress Eve "Evie" Tozer (Bess Armstrong) to find her missing father (Wilford Brimley). The supporting cast includes Robert Morley and Brian Blessed. The Golden Harvest film (released by Warner Bros.) is loosely based on a novel of the same name by Jon Cleary. However, little beyond character names and the basic premise of an aerial race to China survived the translation to film.
While Brian G. Hutton ended up as the final director, originally, High Road to China was helmed by John Huston, before being replaced by Sidney J. Furie. The musical score was composed by John Barry. It was the 27th highest-grossing film of 1983, bringing in $28,445,927 at the domestic box office.[1]

Plot[edit]
Eve Tozer (Bess Armstrong) is a society heiress and flapper living the high-life in 1920s Istanbul. She needs to find her father, Bradley Tozer (Wilford Brimley), before he is officially declared dead or risk losing her inheritance to his scheming business partner, Bentik (Robert Morley). She only has 12 days. Eve hires World War I ace pilot Patrick O'Malley (Tom Selleck) and his aircraft. O'Malley is eager to take the job as he needs to leave town rather urgently himself. Eve, also an accomplished pilot, however, is determined to accompany him in his other aircraft, which causes the first of many arguments on the way from Istanbul and China.Their journey in two biplanes (named "Dorothy" and "Lillian" after the famous Gish silent film star sisters[2]) through six countries leads them to finally find the eccentric Bradley Tozer in China, where he is helping a small village defend itself against a local warlord. O'Malley and Eve help them win the final battle, but their one remaining aircraft is damaged in the process, leaving her seemingly unable to meet her deadline.Cast[edit]

There could not be another Indiana Jones, a role that Tom Selleck could not accept, being already engaged in the Magnum series. The realization is also less grandiose than that of Indiana.
In Istanbul, Eve Tozer, a rich English heiress who leads the good life, learns that she must find her father disappeared in Asia, and present before a British court before twelve days, on pain of losing all his fortune. If Bentik, his father's partner, can prove the death of his partner, he will become the sole owner of his company and thus deprive Eve Tozer of his inheritance. She then hires a pilot, O'Malley, a former war ace who has sunk in alcohol and who owns the only two planes available. Eve, who is an accomplished pilot, decides to accompany her to the controls of the second aircraft. Assassins are employed by Bentik to prevent Eve from finding her father. In Afghanistan, they land in a tribe of fierce warriors whose leader tells him that his father is dead. He also wants to buy Eve from O'Malley and also asks him to bomb an opponent's camp! They narrowly escape and arrive in India and Nepal, guided by one of the Afghan leader's wives. They find traces of the passage of Tozer, when they are attacked by a plane that destroys one of them. O'Malley decides to leave with Eve leaving her mechanic on the spot. They arrive in China, near a stronghold besieged by a warlord. Eve is surprised to find her father who helps the inhabitants to resist their attackers. There are only two days left before the fateful date. With O'Malley's plane, Eve attacks the besiegers, but the plane is destroyed as well as any hope of rallying London in time. The attackers are repulsed; The film ends a little abruptly; Eve Tozer has probably lost her fortune (at least that's what we understand), but won the love. This sort of "Tribulation of an Englishwoman in China" obviously lacks breath, and probably did not have a very large budget.High Road to China (Warner 1983, 105m) D: Brian Hutton. Tom Sellick = O'Malley, Bess Armstrong = Eve, Jack Weston = Struts, Wilford Brimley = Bradley Tozer, Robert Morley = Bentik. Screenplay: Jon Cleary, S Lee Pogostin. A pilot is saddled with a spoiled industrialist's daughter on a search for her missing father through Asia that eventually involves them in a struggle against a Chinese warlord. Maltin review: "Low road to escapism, with Selleck (in his first starring feature) as a boozy ex-WW1 aerial ace hired by heiress Armstrong to find her father. Strictly mediocre, with substandard action scenes and the flattest dialogue this side of the Great Wall."
AIRCRAFT: Stampe, DH Tiger Moth.
